Innovative technology company, Nothing, has again garnered global attention with the launch of its second mobile phone, the Nothing Phone 2, marking the company’s entry into the US mobile phone market.
The Phone 2 combines a sleek design with an improved Glyph interface, a powerful processor, an improved camera and a longer lasting battery, all at an affordable price of $599.
Sleek and improved design
Nothing Phone 2 features a sleek design with significant improvements over its predecessor Phone 1. It’s thinner and lighter, with a rounded glass back that provides a comfortable feel to hold. Additionally, it features a semi-transparent glossy back and enhanced Glyph lighting, giving it a sleek and distinctive look. With dimensions of 162.1 x 76.4 x 8.6 mm and a weight of 201.2 g, the Nothing Phone 2 can feel comfortable and light in the hand.
Protection and basic resistance. Although the Nothing Phone 2 doesn’t feature water resistance, it does have an IP54 rating, which means it’s protected against splashing water and dust in limited amounts. Although this rating isn’t as high as some other phones, it does provide basic protection against dust and particles.
Exceptional viewing experience. The Nothing Phone 2’s 6.7-inch OLED LTPO display is another highlight. It offers a high refresh rate of 120Hz, HDR 10+ and 10-bit colour, with a maximum brightness of 1600nit. These combined features ensure an exceptional viewing experience. Compared to the 6.2-inch AMOLED screen on the Phone 1, the jump to the 6.7-inch screen on the Phone 2 represents a significant improvement.
Glyph interface and visual notifications
One of the most striking features of the Phone 2 is its Glyph interface, which allows you to display information and interact with the rear LED strip.
The Glyph interface uses more LED lights to communicate phone details without needing to turn on the screen. Users can check volume, view the status of a countdown, receive information about a taxi’s arrival time, and more, all through the Glyph interface.
Additionally, different lighting modes can be set for specific contacts, allowing for instant visual notification when receiving messages. Users also have the option to customize lighting and sound effects through the Glyph editor.
Superior power and performance
Nothing Phone 2 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, considered the best processor for Android devices in 2022.
In addition, it has 8 GB or 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and storage options of 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB UFS 3.1. These specifications ensure fast and smooth performance, even for the most demanding tasks. While the base storage is generous, the device also supports expansion via a microSD card.
Camera improvements and high-quality selfies. The Nothing Phone 2’s camera has been upgraded with a main rear camera and an ultra-wide angle camera, both with 50 MP sensors. The main sensor, the Sony IMX890, supports 4K video recording at 60 frames per second and offers advanced features such as optical image stabilization (OIS), night mode and portrait mode. On the front side, the phone incorporates a 32 MP sensor to capture high-quality selfies.
Long-lasting battery and fast charging options. Nothing has emphasized the Phone 2’s battery life, which has a capacity of 4700 mAh. Plus, it supports 45W fast charging, which means it can be fully charged in just 55 minutes. The device also supports 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging.
Nothing OS 2.0 and additional features
The Nothing Phone 2 runs Nothing OS 2.0, a custom operating system based on Android 13.
Designed to provide a “fast and smooth” experience, Nothing OS 2.0 introduces a fresh black and white theme and allows users to hide app labels for a more concise interface.
In addition, improvements have been made to the home and lock screen widgets, as well as other custom design elements.
The device also comes with additional features such as IP54 dust and splash proof rating, NFC support, dual speakers, and 3-year Android major version updates and 4-year security updates.
Availability and affordable prices. The Nothing Phone 2 is currently available for pre-order on the official Nothing website, as well as in select physical stores in New York and London starting July 13. The full launch of the device will take place on July 17. The prices for the different models are:
- 8GB + 128GB: $599 (£579 / €679)
- 12GB + 256GB: $699 (£629 / €729)
- 12GB + 512GB: $799 (£699 / €849)
Conclusion: Nothing Phone 2, an attractive option with a reasonable price
As the prices of Apple and Samsung flagship products exceed $1000, Nothing has managed to offer a high-quality device at a more affordable price. Although the base model of the Nothing Phone 1 sold for £399 (€469), the company has significantly improved the Phone 2 in terms of design, features and performance, thus justifying its competitive price.
