ModRetro Chromatic, a tribute to the classic Game Boy

In recent years, retro consoles have seen a resurgence with devices like the Analogue Pocket. But, not everyone is satisfied with these modern recreations. That is why Palmer Luckey, known for his innovative virtual reality technology, has decided to create his own version of the classic Game Boy. This is how the ModRetro Chromatic was born, a portable console for fans of retro video games. Priced at $199, this console works with real cartridges (Game Boy and Game Boy Color, as well as exclusive Chromatic ones), while also offering modern features without sacrificing nostalgia.

ModRetro Chromatic: Faithful to the original

The ModRetro Chromatic has been meticulously designed to look as close as possible to the original Game Boy. It features a case that has the same dimensions, as well as a screen calibrated to replicate the colors and clock speed of the original console.

In an interview with The Verge, Palmer Luckey says that the Analogue Pocket, despite its merits, does not meet his expectations for authenticity. In Luckey’s words, “The color temperatures are actually correct, the clock speeds aren’t slightly off, the pixel structure isn’t totally wrong in a way that ruins subpixel-aware sprites, etc.”

Characteristics

Although the ModRetro Chromatic seeks to emulate the classic Game Boy experience, it also includes improvements such as a magnesium alloy casing, much more durable than the plastic of the original. The screen, with more than a thousand nits of brightness, provides optimal visibility even in direct sunlight, solving one of the biggest drawbacks of old portable consoles.

Additionally, each console comes with a free copy of Tetris, specifically redesigned for the Chromatic.

Technical specifications

The ModRetro Chromatic has a 2.56-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 160 x 144 pixels, offering visual quality that respects the original design of the games. In terms of audio, it includes an ultra-loud speaker module and a 3.5mm headphone output.

For connectivity, the handheld console offers a backwards-compatible cable port and IR link, as well as lag-free USB-C video output.

As for power, it comes with three AA batteries, but is also compatible with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery through the console, providing flexibility and convenience.

The console has dimensions of 13.21 x 7.62 x 3.05 centimeters and weighs 175 grams, maintaining a manageable size and weight for portability.

The case is made of a thixomolded magnesium alloy and the screen is protected with sapphire crystal.

When purchasing the ModRetro Chromatic, users will receive the console, a Chromatic Tetris cartridge, a USB-C cable, and three AA ModRetro batteries. This offer ensures that players have everything they need to start enjoying their favorite retro games right out of the box.

Availability and delivery

The ModRetro Chromatic is now available for pre-order and deliveries are expected to begin this Christmas 2024. Although the wait may seem long, expectations are high and many believe that the quality and authenticity of the console will make it worth it .
