Windows is the most popular operating system for videogame developers. It’s used all around the world to create different videogames for computers. Taking this into account, Microsoft introduced the Windows game mode in 2017 in order to enhance performance in any computer when running a game.
Windows videogame mode is available on Windows 10 and Windows 11and it works by setting new parameters for computer resource consumption. It deals with other apps from the device and centers attention on the videogame running instead of background apps.
How does Windows game mode work
The Windows videogame mode is a native feature that gives priority to system resources for playing videogames. When you are running a videogame it blocks hardware and software in the background to enhance videogame performance. All your PC resources that are not directly involved in videogame running, go to the background.
The game mode only starts when the computer detects a videogame starts running. You don’t need to activate it or disable it manually. Each time you start a game session, it will work automatically.
Does it work with apps?
The answer is no. Game mode only activates when the computer is running a videogame.
Windows game mode is not worth trying
Even though the feature is designed to improve running performance for low-end computers, it does not enhance resources artificially. So in fact, it barely affects the computer performance. If you don’t have the necessary requirements, the game won’t run at all.
For it to really work you should limit the number of background apps. That way you can free AM memory and you should also avoid installing apps that you don’t really need.
How do you enable Windows game mode?
In order to activate Windows videogame mode you can use the Game Bar in the operating system settings. However, latest versions of Windows 10 and 11 have the switch directly on the setting options. Press Win + I and access the game tab. There you will find the toogle for Windows videogame mode activation.
