It was already available for iPhone and iPad since December 2023, but now Microsoft has launched its Copilot artificial intelligence assistant as a native app for macOS.
Until now, Mac users could only access this service through the browser on the Microsoft website, but from now on, they will be able to download it directly from the App Store.
This independent version offers a more fluid integration with Apple’s operating system and adds some practical functions.
The new application maintains the same capabilities as its web version, allowing you to generate text and images, answer questions, organize tasks, search for information and even write code.
In addition, Microsoft has incorporated specific keyboard shortcuts for macOS, such as Command + Space to quickly activate it and Option + Space to open an input box. Support for dark mode has also been included, ideal for low-light environments.
Currently, Copilot works with several large language models (LLM), including ChatGPT-4, DALL-E 3, Codex and Prometheus, Microsoft’s own model.
Recently, the company also announced that Copilot Voice and Think Deeper features will be available for free to all users. These tools expand the capabilities of the assistant, offering more advanced and in-depth interactions.
One of the main requirements to use the application on Mac is to have a Mac with an Apple Silicon processor (M1 or higher) and macOS 14 Sonoma or later versions. Those who use Macs with Intel processors will have to continue accessing Copilot from the web, since the application is not compatible with these devices.
Major technology companies have had a difficult history when it comes to optimizing their software on competing hardware, but the arrival of Copilot on macOS shows that Microsoft has prioritized the accessibility of its tool across different platforms.
