Chromecast stopped working

Second-generation Chromecast fails due to certification issue

Over the weekend, several second-generation Chromecast users found that their devices stopped working without warning. The funny thing is that both the first and third-generation models are still working.

Initially, it was thought that Google had decided to withdraw support for these devices, something the company has done in the past with other products. But shortly after, it was confirmed that Google is aware of the problem and is already working on a solution. However, they have not given details about the causes of the problem, but they do say that it is a fault on Google’s side and not the users’.

A Reddit user, identified as u/tchebb, investigated the problem and discovered that the cause could be related to the expiration of the Chromecast’s authentication certificate.

When reviewing the error logs in Chrome, the user identified that the intermediate certificate authority (CA) became invalid on March 9, 2025, which seems to have caused the affected devices to go offline.

The bug manifests itself when trying to stream content to the Chromecast, displaying an error message that states:

“Untrusted device: [name] could not be verified. This could be due to outdated firmware on the device.”

The only option is to close the error window, which prevents the use of the Chromecast for its primary function. Apps, such as YouTube, have been affected by this inconvenience, further aggravating the situation, especially when other Pixel devices have been experiencing brightness issues after the latest update.

While there is no exact date for the solution, as Google is already working on solving it, it is expected that it will soon function normally again and users will be able to use them again without problems.
